Word and Work was published by the Christian Workers Union, an interdenominational organization established in the 1870s. Most early members were in New England and identified with Wesleyan, Keswick, or other Holiness movements. Samuel G. Otis, who served as superintendent of the Christian Workers Union, began publication of Word and Work in 1879. The earliest surviving copies of the magazine are from 1899, and it is unknown whether the magazine had a different name in its early years. After Otis identified with the Pentecostal movement in 1906, the magazine became an important publication networking Pentecostals in the northeastern United States. Otis died in 1926. The Christian Workers Union worked closely with the Russian and Eastern European Mission from 1928 to 1931. Beginning in March 1939, Work and Work was published by the New England District Council of the Assemblies of God. The magazine ceased publication with the March 1940 issue.
